definition of palliative

Arkansas Center for Aging, a medical center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), provides specialized services for older patients in dire need of care. This multidisciplinary program offers care for patients older than 65 with cognitive and physical disabilities. These doctors treat patients at Baptist Health and UAMS. This center also trains the next generation in geriatricians.

UAMS is the sole state's health sciences university. This includes colleges of nursing, medicine, pharmacy and a graduate program. With over 11,000 employees, UAMS is also the state's largest public employer. UAMS received $3,015,565 from the Reynolds Foundation in 2009 for support of the Center on Aging.

UAMS Center on Aging provides senior expos free of charge to promote healthy aging. Participants can find out about the various conditions and diseases that affect seniors, get health screenings, and win door prizes. Participants can receive health screenings, nutritional advice and information on physical fitness.

A key component of the UAMS Center on Aging is its partnership with other community agencies to provide care for the elderly. The center provides programs that help seniors improve their health, including an Alzheimer's/Dementia Program and a physical/exercise program. There are several Centers on Aging located throughout the state. They provide local access to specialized healthcare.

UAMS has launched a five-year fund-raising campaign to further its commitment towards the elderly. It expects to raise $4335,700 over the course of the campaign. One portion of the campaign will go to infrastructure and education facilities.

Research support will be another component. Officials from UAMS see UAMS as an important source of extramural funds for aging research. They expect that a core set of researchers will be recognized in the country. However, the medical institution has not reached its critical mass of qualified scientists.

The Center on Aging took steps to expand its support of a wide range of scientific programmes. For instance, the university is seeking to establish links with clinical programs such as the Meals on Wheels program and the Arkansas Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. The center also plans to create a multi-disciplinary team approach to senior care.

UAMS is also working with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences' Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging to develop the first state-wide interdisciplinary research program on aging. The partnership will focus on topics such as food insecurity in the elderly, aging-related deaths, and the role family members play in the health and well-being of older adults.

University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences was one of few academic health centers to use an interdisciplinary team approach for senior care. The complete care plan includes the needs of the patient and their environment. It also considers the health and well-being of their caregivers.

UAMS also believes in educating the public about aging, and making sure that the elderly have the best quality possible of life. UAMS offers many programs that provide education for seniors and their families.

Public insurance covers only routine visits to doctors and hospitals, as well as labs, Xray facilities, dental offices and prescription drugs. It also does not cover certain preventive procedures.
